Alpha-H: A Break Down, Done My Way!

Throughout this week, my fellow beauty bloggers and Twitter friends have been talking, correction screaming about Alpha-H. I was introduced to this Australian brand almost 2 years ago and have since been a huge fan both personally and professionaly. With all the excitement and questions, I thought I'd break down the items I use on myself and on the models and celebs that I work with. And also what the products do and how to use them. Hopefully this will be useful for anyone with any questions as to what will suit them. One key point I will make is that this is skincare and with any brand, some people will love it, some will not. I amongst many many people have found it to be very effective but at the end of the day, it's a totally subjective matter and only you will know whether this is a brand for you or not.
Cleansing

Balancing Cleanser
A creamy cleanser which I have found to be very efficient for cleansing and removing makeup. I use this at night after a whole day's grime and dirt. Apply onto damp face and remove with either muslin, sponge or damp cotton pads. As with all cleansers, I recommend doing it twice, once to remove superficial dirt and the second time to really massage into skin to get it all super clean.

Triple Action Cleanser
I love this in the mornings as it's a light gel and I don't like anything too creamy on my skin for the day ahead. Again apply onto damp skin and I just rinse off with water.

Micro Cleanse
A gorgeous amazing exfoliant consisting of round micro beads that removes dead skin and smoothens. It's 12% Glycolic Acid ensures that skin is left super clean without causing any irritation. I use this once every 2 weeks and for the mornings when I need help to wake up. With it's fresh peppermint scent, it's one to wake up with. A tip is to cleanse the face, apply this on like a mask, inhale the zingy scent while you go about brushing your teeth etc and when you're ready, gently using circular movements, work the exfoliant to reveal sparkling smooth skin.

Gentle Daily Exfoliant
A new addition, this daily exfoliant with Kaolin, Papaya and Pineapple enzymes, is great for everyday gentle exfoliation to brighten the skin. The freeze-dried enzymes activate with the addition of water to form a creamy emulsion you work all over the face. A great tip to use this product is to mix it in with your cleanser of choice and massage into skin on the second cleansing. That's how I use it and it's great!

Clear Skin Daily Face Wash
Another new addition, another love! For fans of a foaming wash, this light foaming gel is great for problem skin. Intoxicating Eucalyptus and Tea Tree, this gentle but highly anti-bacterial face wash is respectful of the skin's delicate balance whilst actively zapping away problems such as spots.
Hydration, aka Moisturising

Daily Essential Moisturiser SPF 50+
A great daily moisturiser with a built in SPF 50+ that isn't chalky or greasy. I use this every morning to protect myself. An important fact is that when you start using treatment products with Glycolic Acid, AHAs, BHAs etc that promote skin cell renewal, it is vital to have SPF on your face as the skin is young and fresh! I carry this for shoots outdoors and on trips when I know the model and myself are going to be outdoors and every time, we're the only ones that don't end up getting sun burnt!

Essential Hydration Cream
A lovely light moisturiser with gorgeous Ylang Ylang and Arnica for healing, this makes a beautiful product to use at night after cleansing and before bed.

Clear Skin Daily Hydrator Gel
A must for the men or anyone who doesn't like creams or lotions on the face during the day. This clear gel with Tea Tree and Eucalyptus has the ability to absorb moisture from the surrounding air to hydrate your skin. I have chosen to use this during the warmer months when I don't want too heavy a moisturiser.

Absolute Eye Complex
The only eye gel or product that you can take all the way to your lash line! I keep mine in the fridge and trust me, this was the only thing the woke me up during 4am wake up times for fashion week! Gentle botanicals sloughs away dead skin and hydrate the delicate skin round the eye. It also has a very pleasing gentle tightening effect courtesy of synthetic egg white!

Harmony Infusion
A beautifully scented botanical spray for those who like toners before moisturising. I use this on myself throughout the day or on long flights when my skin becomes thirsty.
Specialty & Hero Products

Liquid Gold
The star of this whole range! Liquid Gold is a glycolic-based liquid that resurfaces skin and kick starts lazy skin into gear! Think of this as that sadistic personal trainer that ensures that your skin gets as much help and work as hard as possible whilst you sleep! Used maximum of 3 nights a week, either in 3 continuous nights or alternating nights, your skin wakes up in the morning clearer, firmer and more even in skin tone! I use mine on alternating nights on cleansed skin, applied with cotton pads and that's it. Some people like adding on a serum or moisturiser but you don't have to. I don't and even then your skin will not feel tight or uncomfortable. You really have to use this to believe it!

White Gold
Much like its sister, Liquid Gold, this is beneficial for those with pigmentation caused by sun damage or ageing. Applied under moisturiser and coupled with decent SPF, it's highly effective.

Liquid Gold Smoothing And Refining Mask
My go-to mask for when I need skin to super hydrated, clear and rejuvenated! It contains Liquid Gold to actively brighten up and clarify dull skin. I use it on close-up beauty shoots when I really need the model or celeb's skin to be gorgeous and clear. It tingles but will subside after a moment. I also have been known to apply this on a long flight (13 hours!) and yes you will get weird stares but when you clean it off just before you land, your skin will be clear, sparkling and super moist and plump! And your fellow dehydrated dull-skinned passengers will be so jealous!

Purifying Clay Mask
Another favourite mask of mine. This clay mask sucks out all the stuff that clogs your skin and leaves it cleaner and smoother. And it does all this without distrupting your skin's gentle balance.

Liquid Gold Intensive Night Repair Serum
A treatment serum to be used on the nights when you're not using Liquid Gold. It contains Glycolic Acid and powerful Vitamin A & B3 to really give dull skin a boost! It tingles on application but I usually apply a thin film of Essential Hydration Cream and it calms down to leave skin refined and plump. Over the time I've used it, I've noticed that my pores are finer and there's less congestion.

Liquid Gold Poly-Oxidant
A potent cocktail of anti oxidants, this gel is either applied under or mixed with moisturiser. I apply this in the mornings just under my moisturiser to help battle all the free radicals that causes ageing, wrinkles and cell damage throughout the day. Never looked back or been without every since!

And that's pretty much all I know about the range and it's a pretty comprehensive walk-through don't you think? The best thing is to sit down and think of what you want out of your skin and the products and choose accordingly. Yes it might be pricey but when it comes to skin, I think it's worth that little bit more to ensure the best results. Just remember the better your skin, the less makeup you will have to wear! Like any of my other posts, please comment and if you have any questions, give me a shout and I will answer or discuss as soon as possible.

Alpha-H products are available through QVC, HQHair, BeautyExpert, LookFantastic, CultBeauty & ManKind.

You can also experience a facial at UK's only Alpha-H licensed facial clinic Fern Clinic.

  1. What a fab post Kenneth. I've been using Alpha-H for a few months now and I have really noticed a positive change in my skin. I got the recent TSV yesterday, so I've fallen in love with the Gentle Exfoliator. One use and I can see/feel the difference. I'm dottie about the Micro Cleanse and of course, Liquid Gold is A-MAZ-ING! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for making my Alpha-H shopping list a little longer... x

  3. Hey Bhaiya,
I absolutely love this post and I can't wait until I can start introducing more Alpha-H products in to my routine. I've been using the Balancing Cleanser, Absolute Eye Complex, Daily Essential Moisturiser SPF50+ and Liquid Gold and have seen major improvements.
The next two products that I'm going to introduce from tomorrow onwards will be the Balancing Moisturiser and Gentle Exfoliant along with the Gentle Daily Exfoliant.

If my skin carries on improving, I'm sure it won't take long for me to introduce more products in to my regime! xoxo

  4. @Amrita: Hey Didi, so glad that it's working for your skin and helping! I haven't tried the Balancing moisturiser yet as it's too potent for use on models faces and I feel that I don't need it on mine so let me know how you get on with it. Untill then, thanks for the sweet comment and anything I can help with just let me know ok? XX

  7. Great informative post as usual. I've just started using this after buying the 7 piece Daily Miracles set from Beauty Expert. I am seriously impressed. The texture and appearance of my skin improved after just one night of using the Liquid Gold and Triple Action Cleanser. Am looking forward to using the rest of the set, and duly adding to my Alpha HQ shopping list!

  19. My mum has good skin. So I just briefly took one of her SKII (http://www.geocities.jp/hongkong_skii/index_e.htm) to use, which I assume is a moisturizer. It's good man I tell you! She gave me a small bottle of eye cream before but the effects weren't that great and I stopped using. But my mum's moisturizer is good! I can feel it reacting once I applied it

    ReplyDelete
  20. @Gillion: Hi! Yes I've used the SKII range before and it's a great range. I'm a big fan but found it to be slightly too rich for my skin. Thanks for sharing the tip. x

  25. Terrific post as always Mr S! I could really use some advice, I have really really dry skin, that I just can't seem to make happy. It has some tiny broken veins, is prone to redness (which maybe rosacea or rosacea like) on cheeks, chin and nose, I get flare ups of brighter red patches but never a full on spot. In the mornings I use a tissue off gel cleanser, apply facial oil, anti redness cream, cooling eye gel, moisuturising eye cream, a richer hydrating cream and then just before I apply my foundation I have a sample of a lovel Cosmetics a La Carte Rose Balm which is moisturiser and primer in one. Foundation goes on well and is fine for around an hour and then my skin dries out and looks awful and I end up slathering on a bit more moisturiser and applying additional foundation on top (I can hear you screaming from here!) I cleanse thoroughly with a rinse off cleanser in the evening and use a gentle exfoliating scrub every other night and use a facial oil every evening and still my skin feels parched. As you know I am very ancient and am wondering if that is part of the problem! I keep hearing such good things about Alpah-H but am concerned it might be a bit too strong for my skin (I have heard mention of slight tingling which scares me!) Any and all advice much appreciated! xx

  26. @Debbie: First of all Debbie, thanks for the kind comment. Now let's get down to business. I have seeked the expertise of Tom Ogden who deals with the UK side for advice. All I can say is that you need to strengthen the skin on your face and maybe using so many different products on your skin is not helping. It's best to keep it simple and pure. Personally I wouldn't use a scrub every other night as it might be aggravating your skin. The daily scrub would be amazing for you as it's gentle and non abrasive. I'll email you the advice when I get it from Tom and let's go from there. I've got sensitive skin too and found that I was irritating it too much with too many products and switching to AH has made my skin stronger and less irritated. Let's hope this all works ok? Thanks for the comment and I hope it's helped. XX

  27. Read this post when it first came out, but hadn't had the chance to comment yet. Thanks for actually going through the products - I've always wondered about the exfoliator, as I am quite keen on exfoliation as I am starting to get hyperpigmentation despite my usage of high spfs! I suppose it's the Chinese in me...

    ReplyDelete
  28. @Kharina: Do you mean the daily one? If so yup it's great for mixing in with your cleanser in the morning. Unfortunately pigmentation affects lots of us and you cold be right about the chinese blood affectng u more. I would suggest using the daily exfoliant with cleanser, followed by dabbing White Gold on affected areas & then the SPF 50+ moisturiser. In the evenings use LG 3 nites a week and the rest of the week use the intensive night repair. I hope that will work. That's what I use as well and it's kept my skin in good strong condition. Thank you for the comment and should you need to find out anything, just email or comment here and I can always find out for you if I don't know. X

  31. hey! i am new to your blog and it is really great! i actually just order the daily miracles set to try alpha h and i was just wondering if you had some other ideas that would help my skin? it's really dry (i have been taking roaccutane for a while) and i have marks and scars left over from old breakouts and big pores on my nose. any products or lines you'd think would be good? X

    ReplyDelete
  32. @Mira: Hi Mira and thank you for the kind comments! I used to take roaccutane and while it's helped me get rid of my acne, I too found that it left my skin everywhere dry. Right I just checked what you had in the daily miracles set. I would use everything you get except the Rejuvenating Cream. It's potent stuff and especially when you're using glycolic products for the 1st time, it might all be too much for the skin. I would start with the balancing cleanser, that's great for all skin, then during the day use a lighter moisturiser with SPF and use the Liquid Gold 3X a week at night on clean skin with mothing else. Then the rest of the week when not using LG, use intensive night repair cream. Just see how your skin is, if you find that it's too strong for you, use LG 2x a week and use a normal non glycolic moisturiser at night. The trick is to prescribe as to how your skin is reacting ok? Let me know how you get on and if you need more help, message me here ok? Thanks again! xx

  35. Hello!! Thank you so much for taking the time to write this post! It's wonderful and I've been waiting for one just like it! My question is-I'm very interested in trying the Liquid Gold. Is the Liquid Gold Reparing Night Serum necessary/highly recommended as well? Also, I have sensitive skin that is spot prone--should I try the Balancing Cleanser? or the Clear Skin Facial Wash? Is it safe for sensitive skin? Thanks soo much!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. @Anon/B: Hello! Glad you enjoyed it and found it useful. Pesonally I think Liquid Gold is a must for whatever skin types. You only use it at night 3 times a week and the rest of the week use whatever moisturiser you're using. The Night Serum is not tat necessary. You should just stick to balancing and LG to get the skin accustomed to glycolic and to balance out before adding more of the range in. The trick to using this range properly is to introduce the glycolic factor slowly and building up strength and resilience into the skin. After a few mths or after finishing the 1st batch, then you can start thinking of adding more stuff in. Hope this helps, feel free to message me should you need any help ok? Thanks again for reading & commenting. x

  39. Hi Kenneth! I have been LOVING the Alpha H products. One question, I have currently been using the Liquid Gold Smoothing and Refining Mask and I noticed that after I take it off I have a few blemishes on my face that weren't there before. From your experience with the mask, do you think the mask is breaking me out? Or is it just cleaning out my skin and bringing spots to the surface? Thanks soo much!! xx -B

    ReplyDelete
  40. @Anon/B: Hey, no worries and glad that you're enjoying the products. I need a bit more information. How long do you leave the mask on for? Personally I have never reacted badly to the mask, yes I sometimes get a spot to the surface but this is usually because the mask has brought out and cleared out any blemish on my skin. I would keep a close watch. How often are you using the mask as well? I would use it more than once a week and not after scrubbing the skin. I hope this helps. Please keep me informed ok? X

    ReplyDelete
  41. Thank you so much for your kind reply. I have used the mask twice so far. Once a week for about 7-10 minutes. I haven't left it on longer since the packaging says 10 minutes maximum. I'll definitely keep an eye on it. I'm thinking maybe it's just bringing the spots to the surface but I wanted to get your opinion. x B
